What is a PPS Number?
Your PPS Number is a unique reference number that helps you access social welfare benefits, public services and information in Ireland. PPS Numbers consist of seven numbers followed by either one or two letters.
Who can apply for a PPS Number?
You can only get a PPS Number if you need one to access public services. For example, if you are starting a job you will need a PPS Number to pay tax. You do not need a PPS Number if you are looking for work.
To apply for a PPS Number you must:
- Not have been issued a PPS Number before
- Live in Ireland or have an Irish address
- Have a valid reason for applying. For example, you may need a PPS Number to pay tax when starting a job. If you are applying for your child, they may need a PPS Number to start school. You do not need a PPS Number if you are only looking for work.
Find out more about when a PPS Number is required on Gov.ie.
You can make an application for yourself or for your child. You can also apply for both you and your child in the same application.
Where can I find an existing PPS Number?
If you are returning to Ireland, you may already have a PPS Number, so you do not need to apply for a new one.
PPS Numbers can be found on the following documents:
- Public Services Card or Social Services Card
- Medical card or GP visit card
- European Health Insurance Card
- Drugs Payment Scheme Card
- Letters from the Department of Social Protection or Revenue
