Apply if you have been medically certified to self-isolate or are ill due to COVID-19

What is Enhanced Illness Benefit for COVID-19?

This payment is available to employees and the self-employed who cannot work in the short term because:

  • they have been diagnosed with COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

or

  • they have been medically certified to self-isolate/restrict their movements due to being a probable source of infection of COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

They must be absent from work and confined to their home or a medical facility

How to Apply

The application process is the same as Illness Benefit and you will need to be medically certified by your GP or the HSE . A Certificate of Incapacity for Work or an eCert equivalent is required from your GP.  You may not need to attend your GP in person.  Alternatively if you have been advised by the HSE you will have received a letter or text and this can act as certification for your claim.

The personal rate for this payment is €350 per week, as compared with the normal Illness Benefit rate of €203.

It will be paid for a maximum of 2 weeks where a person is self-isolating due to being a probable source of infection, and for a maximum of 10 weeks if a person has been diagnosed with COVID-19 (Coronavirus). If a person has been certified for less than 10 weeks, they will be paid for the duration of their certificate. People whose sole income is their Social Welfare payment need not apply as they will keep their existing payment.

Please do not submit applications for other people as it will delay the processing of the application. 

Civil and public servants should not apply as they will continue to be paid.

Where should I send my certificate?

If you have received an official Certificate of Incapacity for Work from your Doctor you should send it immediately to the Department of Social Protection, Illness Benefit, PO Box 1650, Dublin 1 or email it to illnessenquiry@welfare.ie. Alternately, your Doctor may send the Certificate directly to the Department.  

If your GP has submitted an eCert directly to the Department there is no need to forward any further medical evidence.

Please ensure, where emailing an image of the Certificate of Incapacity for Work, you send both sides of the Certificate in the email, and follow up by sending the paper Certificate in the post to the address above.

Alternatively, if you have been advised by the HSE that you must self-isolate/restrict movements due to being a probable source of infection (for example: contact tracing), you will have received a text or a letter from the HSE that you have been identified as being a contact of someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19. Please submit this as an attachment with your application for Enhanced Illness Benefit for COVID-19.
