What is Illness Benefit?
Illness Benefit is a scheme to support you if you cannot work in the short term because you're sick or ill.
You must claim Illness Benefit within 6 weeks of becoming ill, regardless of whether your employer pays you or not while you are out sick from work. Late applications will be accepted in certain circumstances.
If you cannot work due to an injury that happened at work, you should apply for Occupational Injury Benefit.
Who can get Illness Benefit?
You can get Illness Benefit if:
- You are at least 16 and under 66 years of age
- You have been certified as unfit for work within the last 6 months. In certain circumstances we can accept applications for those certified beyond 6 months but that must be a paper application.
- You have enough PRSI Contributions
What do I need to complete the application?
Your personal details
You will need to provide your current address. If you don't have a verified MyGovID account you will be asked to provide some personal details such as your PPS Number.
Medical evidence
Your doctor can complete your Certificate of Incapacity for Work electronically. If your certificate has not been completed electronically you must submit a paper Certificate of Incapacity of Work to support your application. This can be posted to Social Welfare Services, PO Box 1650, D01 WY03.
Your employment
You will be asked about your employment status and sick leave.
Other income
You will be asked about income from social welfare payments or training schemes.
Your relationship
If relevant, you will be asked if you want to apply for a potential increase in payment for your partner.
Your children
If relevant, you will be asked if you want to apply for a potential increase in payment for your child dependents.
Your payment details
You will need to provide details of the bank account into which you would like to be paid or the post office for collection.
